Style What Essentiel Wears - Hugues Delaunay

Every month we talk to people from Essentiel and talk about their work, style crushes, travel, personal quirks and anything in between. This month we talked to our Visual Merchandising Manager, Hugues Delaunay.

WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION AT ESSENTIEL ANTWERP AND HOW DID YOU END UP HERE?

I am Visual Merchandising Manager and Art Director for the men's advertising campaign. I was working for 5 years at Paul Smith in Paris, when I met Inge on a terrace in Antwerp. A few months later, Inge contacted me with the question to take over the Visual Merchandising department... And without hesitation I accepted this challenging position!

WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I like to think about decors and visual concepts. I work on the best clothes and outfit combinations in order to make the best and eye-catching shop fits and showrooms. You can find inspiration in everything around you and you need to be aware of the trends. Following these trends works in a very inspiring manner. What I don't like is the delays that can become extremely important. You have to be very well organized in order to achieve the final installation dates and to make it work!

EXPLAIN YOUR STYLE?

I would say that I am casual. I wear white T-shirts most of the time, combined with black or blue denim. A nice pair of shoes or a stunning coat with a backpack to finish the outfit.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ESSENTIEL ANTWERP ITEM FROM SS18 AND WHY?

One of my favourites is the red hoodie, perfect color and well-cut. I also like the pyjama pants, very chic and comfortable for summertime.

CAN YOU GIVE US AN INSIDER FASHION TIP?

I think that a good outfit is a mix. Posh clothing with inexpensive basics. You will be amazed at how well Zeeman and Acne work together. For me mixing both extremes is the best way to define your look and personality.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION?

I get inspiration in everything. You need curiosity, to be aware of the trends and exhibitions. Whenever I have the time, I go to flee markets. I have been to the Paco Rabanne exhibition in Madrid which was breathtaking. My interests also lie in the underground scene. My close friends who mostly work in art/fashion/architecture and other creative scenes that keep me up-to-date.

WHAT ARE YOU INTO LATELY?

Nowadays I am really impressed by the new image of Calvin Klein, under the direction of Raf Simons. I am also completely in love with the last album of Frank Ocean.

BEST PLACE TO HAVE BREAKFAST IN BRUSSELS?

I can only say in my bed. I can't do breakfast. :-)

BEST RESTAURANT IN BRUSSELS?

La Guinguette en ville. Close to Sainte Catherine, in a tucked away place next to a smaller baroque church. It's the best place to sit on the terrace with friends and have lunch/dinner.

BEST PLACE FOR GOING OUT IN BRUSSELS?

The Vicuna and Los Ninos parties could be called at least very interesting. It's very underground, fun and secluded. In the summertime I love going to Bruxelles Jardin at the Place Poulaert. The view is amazing and the electronic music is great. Perfect for a hot summer Sunday afternoon.
